Watch "Monkey Business" on Animal Planet. They have a rescue centre full of chimps that used to be pets, photographers props, research chimps etc etc, many of which now have all sorts of behavioural problems and physical mutilations as a result. An adult chimp is 10 times stronger than a man and will end up accidentally doing someone a serious, if not fatal injury. By the time they are a couple of years old most owners can not longer control them and end up destroying them, or confining them in tiny cages where they can't do as much damage and end up living a miserable lonely life. If you go on to the internet "Monkey World" in Dorset (UK), have a web site that tells you all sorts about the many chimps they have rescued and the stories behind the rescues. You should look at it.
Honestly, don't ever consider a chimp as a pet, they're better off in the wild with their own kind, and every time someone buys one as a pet, another one will be stolen from the wild to be sold next, as by buying it you are proving to the poachers and the illegal pet trade, that this is a good "product" to make money from. Many Mothers of these chimps and often the babies themselves are killed when they are shot out of the trees by the poachers. Often only one in 3 survive. If no-one buys them, the poachers will stop catching them.
My advice is to try and do some voluntary work at a sanctuary like Monkey World, and it will seriously educate you as to what terrible atrocities go on and why Chimps make such very bad pets.

It isn't legal to own primates privately as most people don't know how to take proper care of them. A chimp is not a child; a grown male is strong enough to rip your arm off and they have large, sharp teeth.
If you want to enjoy chimps, sponsor one at a zoo or rescue facility, where they look after chimps and other apes who have been rescued from irresponsible humans who thought they could look after them, or bought them as status symbols or "toys" and then discovered they were in too deep.
Try a dog, cat or rabbit if you want a furry pet.

Why would you even want to? You would just be increasing the demand and thereby increasing the drive for illegal poaching. I know this was an innocent question, but why don't you think about studying zoology when you get older and working with chimps in the wild? Or you could become wildlife vet?

Forget it. Baby gorillas are cute too but they grow up. Chimps are no different. If you don't mind missing a few body parts then a chimp is for you. Why not get a baby crocodile and really get serious?

zoos wont sell them. any way they dont make good pets. they need constant attention like human babys, they get extreamly strong so can be dangeruos to handle. and they need the social contact of other chimps.

Youre not allowed to keep pet chimps in the UK. They are protected and you would probably end up in jail.

Hey kid, check this website out and then tell me you still want a monkey:
http://www.petmonkey.info/index.html
Go look at Articles/Info and Testimonials. There is a PowerPoint presentation in there too that's worth watching.
There are far better pets than monkeys, that haven't been ripped from their mothers far too young and sold illegally.

Please DO NOT buy a monkey as a pet. They make terrible pets. They are difficult to manage and can be destructive. Adults can be dangerous. Local, state and national laws (depending where you live) may prevent you from keeping a monkey as a pet legally. Most pet monkeys eventually end up in zoos, scientific research labs, monkey sanctuaries or being euthanized. PLEASE do not get a pet monkey.
