A good place to start is going to www.bankrate.com

Once you enter your city, state and the type of savings account that you're looking for, they'll provide you with a nice list of banks. I usually sort them from highest APY to lowest. It will also list things like minimum balance requirements to avoid fees. Some savings accounts allow check writing while others don't. If that is important to you, you will also find it listed.

Plugging in my town as an example (and assuming you don't want a minimum balance requirement), the best is EmigrantDirect (5.15% APY). If writing checks directly from your savings account is needed, Citibank Direct (5.00% APY) would be a solid choice. By the way, I don't bank with either of these so I'm not giving you biased info.

Since rates change daily, it's a good idea to keep the site bookmarked so you can go back from time to time and make sure your bank is keeping it's APY competitive.

If you can find a credit union. They usually pay more interest than a bank, bank and home loans are easier to get at a lower percentage rate.
