It depends on your job, for me as a heavy equipment mechanic on a nursery, worthless..

If you want a job at a dealer, it is probably required, I know years ago I applied at a dealer, I had (at the time) been a mechanic for 12 years, one of the first questions the service manager asked me was about my ASE cert...needless to say i didn't get the job.

Now I am in my 40's been twisting wrench for 20+ years, still no ASE, make good pay, drive a company truck and am respected by the people I work for for what i do, and what I know, not for what a paper says I know..and like other poster has said..they cost and many employers do not offer to pay for them...

kind of. I don't think the general public really cares or knows what it is. It really only means you are goo din the book, not necessarily with your hands, hence the 2 work requirement, but it still doesn't prove anything. think of it like college, it shows the potential is there, but not necessarily. without it, it's harder to judge your potential. employers do typically see it as a positive and many will only hire you if you are certified. it shows that you at least have some knowledge. my beef is the cost of them, they keep going up and my employer requires them, but won't pay for them.

Definitely worth it ! ! Having that certification can add $$$ to your paycheck. It will also get the attention of perspective employers.

worth it. Unless you run your own garage, your employer needs to say his guys are certified to be competitive. The general public knows nothing about what you do. Would you go to a doctor who didn't have a degree?
