Sponges are made up of porous cells and tissues. The cell walls which have micro blood vessels, need oxygen for survival. This oxygen is osmosized from sea water as done in the other oceanic creatures.

What can I say, it is a big ocean! Whales live there too and someone might think, boy they must make a pretty big splash when they dive in how can there be any water left in that pool?
