I know New York City has changed dramatically over the past decade--with its steep reduction in crime--becoming one of America's safest cities, but what's up with this obvious swing to the right?

I agree with the previous respondant on greenwich. the problem is that new york politics is very important and economically driven. This city is like a microcosm of the united states, not culturally but economically and politically. The neoconservatives have found a way to court business and the religious and midwestern deep southern communties and the militarist. In new york the economic aspect of republicans attracts the wealthy and their militarism attracts the police who have floundered while every other segment of new york city government has faired much worse. This along with party lines puts them over the top. Very few business people like the democrats in new york, the last two democratic mayors were dinkens and lindsey, both were not liked by the wealthy or the police. The people all to often are for the democratic party but voter turnout by the majority of the populace does not occur because new york has not seen active politics in a long time.

London is home of the "Prince of Darkness" according to Lyndon LaRouche (a kook himself, but a respected kook).

New York is a distant second. With Greenwich Village, New York cannot be a capital of the neocons.
