My son has a theory on why football is so popular. The same thing that critics complain about with the run a play wait 30 seconds run a play wait 30 seconds is what makes it seem that much better. His theory is the reason that football is so beloved and popular is the time between plays allows for an artificial suspense to be created that makes the game seem even more exciting, like if you know the next play is 3rd and 5 and if your team gets the yards or makes the stop the drive continues/stops or if your team gets a stop here its a huge swing they dont get the TD or if we get the TD the momentum is back on our side kind of thing. So for people that like football the 30 seconds between plays give time for different scenarios to have an artificial suspense created for the viewer, its like when you go to a haunted house or scary movie knowing that the scary object is coming up and getting your adrenaline rushing makes it more exciting and fun and its the same in football.

You have part of the attraction posted.
Also, it is the guessing of the strategy. What play will they try next?
What will defense do to stop them?

No two plays are identical and no two games are either.

There is tremendous physical abibility demanded of the players and there is also a lot of mind work at play. Each side tryiing to guess the opponents next move and the offense trying to trick the defense into moving the wrong way.

Perhaps It is a very physical version of chess? I never thought of it that way until just this moment.

Because of the contraversy surrounding baseball with the whole steriods issue and the fact basketball has done poorly in the Olympics in Athens and at the World Champions, football is and has been America's sport since '94 after the baseball strike that year. They have the richest TV deals in the history of sports, better marketing revenues, and players that actually play as a team instead of the individual superstars you see in baseball and basketball.

your son is right to a point, the 30 second breaks are definately part of the appeal. football is the most strategic sport on earth, it's like a hard hitting game of chess. each play is like a move on the chess board, and the breaks between plays are a chance for both teams to stategize about the next play. and yes, as a fan, it IS great to analyze the offensive and defensive strategies.

Because you can reflect and talk about what is happening with your friends.

Baseball has it's moments, but the game has no clock and is rhytmless. It is easy to fall asleep to.

Hockey and Basketball have a lot of time played with only a minute off here and there.

Football you can get into every detail of the game and discuss it over those 30 seconds.

GREAT theory

your son thinks too much.

Football is great because it's strategy with high velocity, collision force impact.

You play chess??
it's like chess...you pretty much know by the first few moves how your opponent will play the game...it's up to you to great diversions and bluffs to make your simplified strategy work...

the difference is...instead of sitting on your huge, homely butt...you're in the game hitting people with 90 pounds of pressure per square inch...at a force great enough to break bones...and you do that up to 70 times in any given game.

some people understand that...others are couch potatoes that think the time space continuum fosters expectations and anxiety...

get your boy into football...break the chain...

because American Football is the most suspenceful and exciting sport out there!
It is totally a team game with not 1 lonley player hogging the ball showing off and taking all the credit.
No other sport is as exciting or enjoyable to watch!

The reason why people think football is exciting is because football is America's favorite pastime sport. They love to watch football in front of the television and have a wonderful, spectacular football party in their homes.

I say its for the same reason Europeans and British people like
European football. when you know the ins sudle deatales of the game plus the stats of each team your entertained at how everything will play out.

Your sons theory is close but what it is, is that you need to know how any game works to be properly entertained. i take it you dont know how it works. same thing whould apply for amaricans who dont know how soccer works.

that's true. but if you watch reggie bush juke 859 defenders or randy moss tip-toe along the sideline at 30 miles an hour catching a ball over his shoulder, you'll knw why people like football
