Hi, I live in a second floor apartment. The place I'm moving to is also on the second floor. There are no elevators, and I don't want to hire any movers. Most of my things will be easy to move, but I'm worried about heavier items (bookcases, futon, bed, tv, etc.) Bringing these things upstairs was a battle in itself, but is bringing them downstairs going to be harder? Does anybody have any tips to make this process easier? Any tips would be appreciated, thanks!

Depending on the weight, size, and type of furniture, moving some things down a flight of stairs can be more difficult than moving them up the stairs. Safety is the biggest issue.

Now is the time to treat your friends and relatives to pizza and sodas in exchange for their help in moving the big items.

Good luck with your move.

When carrying some heavier pieces you can walk backwards down steps so as to keep the back straight. When transporting heavy items up/down stairs strong arms and legs are needed so maneuver the weight while moving. If you are not strong enough for some particular item you will have to move it in small increments or ask someone stronger to move it. If you are using a moving van ask for a hand truck. Some professional movers use a backstrap to move boxes down/up stairs.

For washers, dryers, or items about their size, you can use an appliance dolly - it has straps to strap the item down.

Put a heavy comforter or blanket underneath and "slide" them with two people.
