If you are an English major, English teacher, or just plain love words, this is a question for you! I want to have a CD of songs that have amazing lyrics. As in, songs that have to do with writing, words, or just have good words in it. So if you have any suggestions let me know!! Thanks!

Songs sort of about writing or words:
Paperback Writer - The Beatles
Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello
Brilliant Mistake - Elvis Costello (passing mention of the alphabet)
I'd Love to Write Another Song - Van Morrison
Whiskey Tango - Tanya Donelly

A few great lyricists:
Peter Blegvad: The song "You & Me" from his brilliant album Just Woke Up actually contains the word 'bathysphere'. Many other songs from the album could also qualify: "Mad Love Vanishes," "Meet the Rain" are just two that come to mind. His album King Strut & Other Stories is really like several short stories set to music. Amazing stuff, though sadly hard to find.

Bob Dylan: Where to start? There's too many to count in his long long career. "Shelter From the Storm," "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" are just a few....

Robyn Hitchcock: Off-kilter sensibility is an understatement, but "Television," "Balloon Man" (which contains perhaps the greatest simile in rock: "it rained like a slow divorce") and "One Long Pair of Eyes" are nice choices.

Shane MacGowan & The Pogues: "Thousands Are Sailing," "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda," "Navigator," and "Rainy Night In Soho" are among the best examples of their very poetic style.

Elvis Costello is quite the wordsmith -- you could probably do a whole cd of great EC lyrics. In addition to the two above, I think some of his best wordplay is in the very cinematic "Watchng the Detectives," "Man Out of Time" (dense with great words like 'scarpering' and lines like "whose nerves are always on a knife's edge, who's up late polishing the blade"), and "Beyond Belief."

In my English class we listened to that song with all these ironic events b/c we were reading a book with lots of irony. I don't know the name but you should know the song when I list some of the lines in it. My class loved it!

"Its like rainnnn on your wedding day"

"Goooood advice that you just can't take"

"Who would have thought it figures."

"He won the lottery and died the next day."

"10,000 spoons when you need a knife."

Thats all I can think of, contact me if you need anymore help. Good luck!

Browneyedgirl, that song is called "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette =). It has really good lyrics! A lot of really deep love songs have excellent lyrics. Obviously, or they would sound cheesy and stupid lol.

"What Time is Love?" via the KLF. I continuously bear in mind the music the position the backers ought to sing "Moo-moo! Moo-moo!" and then lyrics like "The ok, the L, the F, and the ology". great stuff.
