SEO is an ever changing field. It is always trying to outsmart the biggest dot com companies in the world which employs the smartest computer scientists to devise the most complex algorythms. It is because of these factors that I would say that trying to chase better rankings through SEO tricks/techniques is a waste of time...

Social Bookmarking is great for developing links. Wikis are up for nearly every field right now. Craigslist and Myspace are a great place to post ads too! These will all generate quality links easily.
