I have tried to change the proxy settings and all that but nothing has helped.

You were using Y!Messenger behind a corporate firewall? If thats the case same thing happened with me and I simple copied the Registry entries from friend's PC where an old version was connecting through and running properly!!

I guess there's something wrong with the connection detection in the newer versions!!! You can try that.
