An analogy is when you describe or explain a thing by showing its relationship to another thing, and comparing these two to a pairing that everyone's familiar with.

For example, kitten is to cat as puppy is to dog. -- the analogy shows two pairs in which first you name the young, then you name the adult.

In the next analogy, look at the relationshio of the first two, and find the word that completes the second part, using the same relationship as between the first two words: Annapolis is to Maryland as Hartford is to______? Yes, Connecticut, because first you're naming the capital city, then the US state.

To say " The bird has reached its perch." in reference to an airplane making a safe landing is an analogy.

An analogy is an inference from certain admitted resemblances between two or more things to a probable further similarity between them; also the likening of one thing to another on the basis of some similarity between them.

A reference to the latter years of ones life as the "autumn years" is analogous to autumn being the latter part of the year.
