I like "Pleasantville" and most people I know think it's stupid. I think it's very symbolic.

That's quite the coincidence...when I first read your question, and before I saw what YOUR favorite was, the first film that popped into my head was "Raising Arizona," a hysterically funny film that I never get tired of watching.
"Local Hero," with Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert, is another of my off-the-beaten-track favorites.

I really liked "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" But it turns out it was on a list for being one of the worst movies of all time.
I like a lot of weird movies, but that was the first one I thought of.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the newest one out on DVD) and The Village. I really liked those movies---but no one else seems to like great directing!

"Better Luck Tomorrow" I loved this movie because I could relate, everyone else I know that saw it thought it was terrible.
