Assuming you are running Windows Media Player 10:
Rollback to Version 9. At least that worked for me. For XP Home, Control panel in catagory view. Add Remove programs. Check the Show Updates box and go to Windows Media Player and click remove. Received on Fri May 06 2005 - 18:05:18 PDT
We have had success fixing this error message by making sure the firewall is configured to allow Windows media player to access the internet, and making sure the windows media player is not set to 'work offline' (file menu). If that doesn't fix it, go to Tools > Options > Player tab - make sure that 'connect to the internet (overrides other commands)' has a checkmark next to it, then go to the Network tab and configure the proxy settings for the 'http' protocol to 'Autodetect' then refresh your internet connection and try again.
