I want to shorten my conifer hedge from about 8 fet, to about 6 feet.

Is there a best, or worst, time of year to do that? Or any tips?

I know to avoid spring/summer in case of nesting birds.

To contain growth or make a plant smaller, prune just before growth begins, cutting stems back to side branches within the plant. About now is the best time actually. The growth will have slowed down,so any bleeding will be minimised, but it will give the cuts time to heal before the winter comes.

Anytime between Oct and March...Then you can burn all the branches on Bonfire Night.!
