Whatever is popular at the time. That is why it is called pop(ular) music.
For example, the band Orgy is death pop in genre, but when they had their hit single BLUE MONDAY, they were listed as pop.
Same thing happened to AFI, same thing happened to 50 Cent, even though he is rap, some of his songs are listed as pop because they were popular enough to get on the pop charts.
But anyway,
I actually think that music is going to take a turn backwards towards the video game era and we are going to be listening to a lot of 8-bit sounds. Think Super Nintendo theme songs along with any system that came before it. Your going to see rap mixes to Mario Bros, punk versions of the Legend of Zelda, hardcore remakes of Mega-man...
Just a hunch.

i hope punk rock never dies. i don't think we can ever extact the sting of real punk rock. sure, we can call artists like panic at the disco and angels and airwaves punk rock, but you just can't do it.
