They probably would have if they hadn't been spread so thin and had taken the colonies more seriously. Also, they played by the rules of the day. Uniforms, straight lines, only fire when fired on, etc. We wore clothes just like non-combatants and hid behind trees and houses.

The British came close to winning the War on more than one occasion. The famous Washington's crossing of the Delaware is a good example of the American Army barely escaping destruction through an heroic act. The War was unpopular in England as many soldiers were killed by the new guerrilla tactics employed by the American Army.
