KTM 950 Adventure is. it's made for travel around the world.
It has good speed, lighter than BMW. Only thing, you might want to do , is change the saddle. It's like sitting on the brick , but there are very good after market saddles for that.

KTM would be my first choice. Second would be one of the supermotard bikes. My third choice would be a BMW but they are very heavy and bring a weld kit if you choose the BMW. Check out the DVD Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor to give you some idea what driving around the world is like. I also saw video of a dutch guy going around the world on a Ducati 916. It showed him crossing waist high rivers in the Amazon. Just remember when traveling. No cash bribes to the police. Ask them if there is a fine and if it is possable to pay the fine here. Spend a year of planning and calling the embassy's to ask for travel permissions. Certain countries require this as well as documentation on every item you are traveling with. Watch the Long Way Round DVD you'll get the idea. Another trick to traveling in other countries that do not like americans is to have a Canadian patch on your jacket and say you are Canadian but are currently living in the US. Hope you enjoy your travels.

For all of you that answered this question with Harley Davidson, I have a quote from Neil Young: "Harleys do not afford me the performance that I require from a motorcycle."

ignore good way around etc., they're doing it the corporate way with totally spec'd motorcycles offered by ability of BMW and a horde of group to devise the holiday. I don't think any 1 particular motorcycle would be ideal for all countries. I think you should consider renting bikes in different countries. A Harley would be the best choice in this country, just because every major city in the country has a Harley shop. But of course in less developed countries where you'll find a lot of dirt roads, an enduro woud make more sence, because the harley has tires best for the asphault. countries in europe where there is no speed limit, a sports bike might be more appropriate . Hope this helps.

A Kawasaki KLR 650 is light, reasonably fast, and has a huge fuel capacity. Add some luggage, upgrade the brakes and suspension, and you should be ready for almost anything. It can do just about anything a dirt bike can on the trail and still run 80+ mph on the highway. Get a better seat for it. The stock one starts to feel like a 1x4 board after a while.

I was going to say a Honda ST1100 or 1300.
Then I read the on & off roard part.
The Kawasaki KLR650 was given top ratings by "Motorcycle Consumer News" in the enduro department.
Do a web search for "kawasaki klr650" and read about it.
Here's one review -

The last sentance of the review - "It's a genuine do-it-all, go anyplace machine that the U.S. military buys in large quantities (can't think of a better reliability endorsement than that)."

BMW all the way...this way if you find...for some very unlikely reason that you need parts you can find BMW parts almost anywhere. Harley's parts can be real hard to find...I know this because I learned the hard way and broke down on my Harley in Africa and Indonesia and it took weeks to get the part in Indonesia...now my world adventures are always on my BMW and have had NO issues...hope this helps.

It's already been done several times on BMW R1200GS bikes. If you want to do it on something completely different, how about a Honda 50cc moped?
