In summary, the executive branch is important because basically it is the 3rd branch of our government... meaning without it, the entire system would be turned upside down.
A more detailed definition is:
The executive is the branch of a government charged with implementing, or executing, the law and running the day-to-day affairs of the government or state. The de facto most senior figure in an executive is referred to as the head of government. The executive may be referred to as the administration, in presidential systems, or simply as the government, in parliamentary systems

As has been stated elsewhere, all three branches are necessary and were designed to provide a balance of power. In some ways, the Judicial branch has sought to increase its power by essentially making law in its interpretation of the Constitution. The Executive branch has sought to increase its power by means of things like going to war without declaring a war. Only Congress can officially declare war but presidents have figured out ways to circumvent that. To answer your actual question, I would say that the Legislative branch is the most important because it is more directly representative of the people. People at the local level are most directly represented by their congressperson and there is one congressperson for roughly the same number of people in every state. At a little higher level, each state has equal representation irrespective of population size by having two Senators.

United States government consists of the president, the vice president and 15 Cabinet-level executive departments.
The president is elected every four years, and chooses his vice president as a running mate. The president is the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces and is essentially the leader of the country. As such, he must deliver a State of the Union address to Congress once each year; may recommend legislation to Congress; may convene Congress; has the power to appoint ambassadors to other nations; can appoint Supreme Court justices and other federal judges; and is expected, with his Cabinet and its agencies, to carry out and enforce the laws of the United States.

The executive branch is responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws. Without it, we have laws that never get put into effect.

the executive branch is where the president belongs and it executes the laws so that means whatever laws the legislature passes, the executive makes sure it happens.
