Since driving a 200m round trip my engine has started producing a knocking noise which sounds like a 'tapping'... there are no other problems with the car but it is a '95 model (Corsa) and has always run smooth and noise free before now?

Just checked the oil and it's still full and there's no sign of a leak anywhere on the engine or pavement underneath..

If there was "hardly any oil in it" before your trip, you need to get that whole system checked out by a mechanic. Obviously you have a leak somewhere. The knock is telling you that there is not enough oil AGAIN. After a 200 (and I assume you meant KM) km trip there should not have been any depreciation. Get it seen to now, or you won't have that Corsa in another month.

OK, I'm going to give you some solid, sound advise. Get you another vehicle before this one lays down on you. It being a "95" it is how old? How many miles is on the car? The knocking noise can't be good, and is a sure sign of real trouble. You may be getting a tapping noise, and if the engine oil is up to level, this is not good! Many things can be the culprit, but you must first look at the mileage on the vehicle, the condition of the engine, the body, the interior, and you know the thing is over the hill. The tapping noise is something worn out in the valve train, the timing chain/belt, the rod bearings, or the main bearings. The cost to repair this problem would total loss the car! I do wish you well though!!

Let me see? you did not change the oil before a long trip just put clean oil on top of dirty oil. Took off drove got the engine warm for an hour or two then a lifter clogged up and the engine is making noise now.
I would have some one listen to the engine and immediately change the oil and filter. Rislone engine treatment helps free up sticking lifters add half bottle with that oil change and just days before your next oil change 2,000 from now add the rest to clean up the lifters. Change oil and filter again.

Check your oil level to make sure you still have adiquate oil life and its full. Sounds like a lifter is wearing out. If so, your looking at a motor rebuild.
Good Luck!

It could be low-quality or inadequate octane rated gasoline if the sound is a high pitched tapping (valve train noise.) If the knock is deeper and constant, it could be a connecting rod or piston slap, but this is unlikely to develop in such a short time. Take it to a repair shop you trust and have them diagnose it for you.

Low oil pressure
Just a lifter out of adjustment.
Dirty oil
A stopted up filter.

It could be any of the things mentioned above but it could also be something as simple as needing to switch to a higher octane of gas for about a week that might straingten it out that has happened to me before. It might just be a tankful of bad gas.

sounds like a bad lifter they can go without any prior warning especially if the car was low on oil at one time

Thats what will do it. No oil in the engine causes damage to the rockers and such. Good luck.

Cam/valve rocker assembly is what you are hearing. Better find out why your car is losing oil and get it fixed before you lose the engine prematurely...
