Alchemy did exist on early age. But Alchemy was prohibited by the Catholic Pope XXII because it was unfair that a poor can produce Gold out of Lead. In alchemy, there is a principle of equivalence, which applies Newton's Law where "for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction," or the so-called equivalent trade that "nothing is gained without loss."
Alchemy shows somewhat mysticism but practically speaking, almost of the processes in alchemy can be explained scientifically.
Maybe today, there are still alchemists. For modern days, they are called Chemists.
Alchemy is the 1st science before Chemistry, Astrology, and Biology began.

Alchemy is just another part of midevil history. There must be hundreds of websites about alchemy. It is largely fiction and certainly anything remotely useful from those days has been greatly improved upon. Economics does not forget things that were really profitable.

Alchemy is a nonsense from a scientific point of view but very very interesting from a physolophical point of view. I suggest to read the books written by Michela Pereira (Professor at the University of Siena) and the alchemical works of Newton. As you probably know, I. Newton spent the great part of his life in theological and alchemical activity, not in physics or mathematics as most people think.

One of the more popular quests of the alchemist was turning base metals into precious ones. For example, turning lead into gold. Some also believed they could create the elixir of life...thus giving immortality.
While immortality is not possible, turning one element into another is technically possible. It is called transmutation.
An element is identified by the number of protons in its atom. Scientists can add and take away protons to single atoms of various elements. So, elements can be changed into other elements.
This process requires lots and lots of energy. The expense of the energy and the necessary equipment to change the number of protons in an atom is really, really expensive...too expensive to make it worth it to do.
Scientist only do it for the science of being able to do it.

If you think alchemy is possible, then I feel sorry for the money wasted on your education (assuming any was).
