It would depend on the house rules.
Contrary to popular belief, there's no standardized set of rules for poker. Each card room will either have a set of rules available you can read, will refer you to a specific set of published rules that they adhere to, or will indicate that any questions about rules can be brought up with the dealers. I imagine that most casinos would forbid this play, likely starting with a warning and then declaring the player's hand dead if he does it a second time.
There are generally accepted rules that practicaly every card-room and home-game adheres to (e.g. no "string raises", "show one, show all", etc), there are verious published sets of rules out there that are in wide-spread use, but there's no "official" set of poker rules established by an official governing body for the game.
One thing is for sure, your friend is displaying piss-poor card ettiquete. If it's really bothersome, make a rule forbidding the showing of cards during a hand and declare that any hand shown in such fashion is dead and forfiets the pot.

NO WAY!
You cannot show any cards in your hand until the hand is over.
Otherwise, it is unethical.
Some casinos will actually issue a warning.
However, I have been to clubs where people show other players their hands, if the other players are no longer in the hands.
Problems arise when one of those "friends" cough or make any other indication of the strength of the exposed hand to other live players.
How can you bluff against these friends later on, when they can see how you play your hand?
Also, if you show your hand to someone jut prior to mucking it, someone may invoke the "Show one, show all" Doctrine.
Overall, it is not a smart play to expose your hand, until you are called.

All the answers above are fine answers for the hardcore games..
If you are playing a friday night game just throwin some coin around just trying to relax then whatever...Yes, it is "piss poor" to do something like that but all he is trying to do is raise a reaction by you. In the SANCTIONED tourneys I play in I have seen players flip over one card just to piss off the other player(s) and it turns around to bite them in the *** later becuase they still lost the hand. Is it annoying? Yes. Is it against the rules? That depends on how unrelaxed a game of poker you are playing.

yeah go ahead; it helps the other players bet more appropriately. No, never do that unless you are all in and someone has called and there is no more betting and you are waiting for the flop.
