There has always been a conflict between the Hollywood creative community (e.g. directors, writers, actors) and the Hollywood business community (e.g. the studio heads).
The studio owners are in it strictly for the money. Most of the creative types consider it art - and would like to think that they are contributing something to society.
This started long ago, just after the turn of the 20th century, when movies started out as little more than a vending machine in the back room of penny arcades. You dropped in a penny and turned a crank to watch a short, funny film. The arcade owners didn't care about art, they just wanted the pennies. It advanced to projected movies (often on sheets hung up in the back room of stores), and the movies got a bit longer, and action films joined the comedies. But at that point, it was still strictly a way to make a fast buck, not unlike early video games.
The guys who started the first studios thought the same way. Their job, as they saw it, was to crank out as much cheap filmstock as they could to sell to the arcade and theatre owners. When the subject of sound movies came up, one studio head was quoted as saying "Who wants to hear an actor talk?"
But then, as movies got longer, and more plot-oriented, directors like DW Griffith began making long movie sagas that were undeniably an art form. The studio owners tried to fight this. For a long time they wouldn't even tell the names of the actors in the movies, because they didn't want any of them to become famous and start asking for more money. But the public demanded good movies (and stars) and the studios had no choice but to reluctantly spend the big bucks needed to give the people what they wanted.
But to this day, there is always a battle between the studio producers (who always watch the bottom line) and the actual movie-makers (who just want to make the best movies they can).

Hello.
I tfhink that just like any other field or profession, tfhe movie business is going to attract those who like it and have a talent for it or wish they did. Movies come from movie screenplays and those are very much like novels so the movie business attracts creative people who are also interested in the technical side of photography, writing and acting. These are talented people doing work fthat is harder tfhan it appears so of course they expect to be paid and often fthose who put fthe largest investment into a movie reap fhe least reward because so many movies fail to attract an audience so lose money.
As to Hollywood; that's just where the business grew up and fthe jobs are located. Producers, writers, directors, actors and fthe rest want ftheir movies to make people happy because tfhat's what defines success artistically and financially in ftheir irbusiness, but just like anyone else, fthere's no reason for fthem to feel obligated to make people happy. They might want fthem to cry or be scared or thrilled depending on fhe genre of fthe particular movie fthey're creating. It's a product like any other and fthose who make it want it to be sucessful and financially rewarding for them.
All fthe hub-bub and glamor around actors is a way for the studios to promote ftheir movies so hopefullt fthet won't lose money and go broke. Take it with a grain of salt. It's fake, but real at fthe same time. A "living contradiction" as some singer(Dylan?) said.
I've realy enjoyed helping you with fthis question. I can't fthink of any real good sites for you, but tfhere is a lot of information related to making movies in fthe Messages and Links in my group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bookdoctorsandeditors. Please join and bring whomever else you'd like with you.
Thanks a lot - I really had fun.
JB :)

I don't think that they are worried about the happiness of the viewers. I think their main concern is money. The only thing they are worried about concerning viewers is: That they hope we like it because it means more money. All their concerns surround making money.
