I have a 4g mini and i want it to die so i can buy a nano!!! I've had it since June 30th, 2005

My friend is actually experiencing the "dead" ipod problem. She charges it and it wont turn on or hold charge. I believe she has had it about two years. We took it over to an apple store, and they're now telling us that the method of charging it through the computer will not work. (funny mine still works and its charged by my car). Anyway they tried to talk her into buying a $30 wall unit, saying that would fix the problem. The ipod recently stopped holding charge. But its a common problem with ipods.
So i would give it 2-3 years, give or take how much you use it.

yeah, i have a mini too and mine died and i got the nano. id say mayb a day without charging it at all.
