IF you have sprinklers set up on timer(s), about 5AM in the summer. That way, rising sun will dry out plants so mildew will not set in.

Well, rain water is always preferable, but if you live in an area like I do where we don't have rain except in the winter months, or you're going through a dry spell, then you should water as early in the morning as possible, so that the water on the grass will evaporate before the sun becomes too intense. When you water in bright sunlight, the drops of water on the blades of grass act like a magnifying glass and will actually burn the grass. When you water at night, then the water doesn't evaporate properly, and can cause other problems such as mildew and fungus in the lawn. If you have a timer on your sprinklers, just set it at 5 or 6 am. and give it a good long soak (20-30 min) a few times a week--you should have a lush green lawn in no time.

If you are a busy person and you don't have the perfect timer system ready to go and all, this is my answer:

Whenever you are home and you get around to it.

I live in Atlanta. It's pretty hot a lot.

I hear things about how you're never supposed to water during the day and always do it at night.

HOWEVER, one thing that I have never heard:

I'm glad it rained at night. If it would have rained during the day, it would have ruined my yard !

MAYBE it's better to water when the sun is not blasting on your yard - MAYBE - I'm not sure that I even buy that anymore.

Bottom line:

If you water your yard with some regularity and don't let it get baked (go for several wayyy hot days w no water) - then it will be ok.

It's like a lot of questions on 'when's the best..' or 'what's the best way ...': the choice usually ends up about being whether the person does anything or not.

DO NOT believe anybody who says that the world will end if you water in the middle of the day.

Ever heard anybody cry about why time it rained ?

No. People cry about whether it rained too little or too much. NEVER about when (meaning time of day).

So, when's the best time ?

Now.

There Is No Time Like The Present.

Water early in the morning or late in afternoon , when the sun starts to go down. When is it not shing on the plants. I have free standing AC's. I have buckets under them. I collect the water that comes out of them from compensation and use this to water my plants, They love it. It works great esp. when it has been so hot and less rain. Plenty of water.. Even though I have well water., Good luck Pem
