This is an easy one., when I took over my sisters place two years ago there was ants every where. I laid down some granules from home depot to kill the out door living colonies (to keep them from re-habitating my home. Then I cleaned the whole house top to bottom, and drew a line around the entire perimeter of every room with raid ant killer. The cupboards need to be done from the inside out and make sure you have plenty of ventilation and don't breath that stuff in because its poisonous to us as well as the ants. (works like a nerve gas). But you can clean and then caulk the cabinet areas as well to minimize the spray area. let the cupboards air out and put back your dishes and food, but no open containers. put every thing in Tupperware or Ziploc bags to keep things safe. The ants wont cross the raid barrier along the walls, and they will lose interest in the kitchen when there is a lack of food. If you have carpenter ants you have a whole new issue cause they are eating rotten wood.
make sure you have no moistier, or leaks and have some one come in and replace any rotten wood in your kitchen area. That can get a bit expensive but worth it if you are living in a home that you own.

This is a cheap fix and it works...buy some 20 Mule Team Borax laundry soap put it in one of the cheap ketchup squirt bottles that you can buy from any dollar store, you may have to snip the tip off to enlarge the hole a little bit....apply around baseboards, kitchen cabinets, around the plumbing under the sink and along the back splash area of your sink, leave the soap lay for a few days until you no longer see any signs of the ants....they Will carry it back to their nest and it Will kill them, I have used this process for years and so did my grandmother. When you no longer see any signs of the ants vacuum up remaining laundry soap that you put down and discard, and use the rest of the box of laundry soap to do laundry with, this is about a five dollar or less fix.

Find the source (nest) and sprinkle ant killer granules on top of the nest. The ants will take the granules down to feed the colony and within 2-3 days the colony will die. Repeat as necessary.
Also, keep kitchens cleaned up so food is not lying out in the open.

You might want to call an exterminator. Did you know that termites look like ants? If you have termites they can ruin your house. They eat wood. To get rid of ants you must get rid of the source. There are so many kinds of ants. There are carpenter ants. Once I had those and the exterminator discovered a tree outside my kitchen that was infested with them which we had to have cut down and removed to eliminate the carpenter ants. Insects can be a real headache. I think, this might be a bigger job than you realize. I suggest calling a professional. It is worth it.

I had the same problem a few years ago. I found where they were coming in the house (a window sill). I wiped it down with lemon juice (bottled) and have not had a problem since. It won't leave a sticky residue and smells good too. You still have to kill the ants that already in the house, but they won't come back.

baby powder or powdered chalk not only stops ants from entering the home but they will carry it back to their ant hill killing all of them as the powder suffocates them to death. Sprinkle a little along door frames and window ledges. The nice thing about this is it wont be seen easily and doesn't have a gagging odor.

I buy Bug Stop from Lowes Hardware/ I spray everywhere with it , best for you to pull out everything and spray. See where they are coming in at , maybe around kitchen widow. I use this to spray around out side my home and inside. , kills bugs. I do this every 3 months or so. it is not very expencive. . or you can set ant bait traps etc , but i find this the best . Good luck Pem

The problem with ants is finding their hive. Follow them to their source and snuff em.
