From American baseball.
The curveball is a type of breaking ball in baseball thrown with a grip and hand motion that imparts forward spin to the ball. This causes it to "break," that is, to fly in a more exaggerated curve than would be expected. The pitch is slower than a fastball, and this difference in speed also tends to disrupt the hitter's timing. A good curveball drops sharply as it reaches the plate, causing the batter to swing above it.
It is a common misconception that throwing a curveball requires a wrist snapping motion during the release of the ball. This is more true for the slider. To properly throw a curveball, the pitcher cocks the wrist inward so that upon release the ball rolls forward over his fingers, creating the desired spin. The Magnus effect then produces a downward force on the ball; this combines with the force of gravity to make the ball curve down.
In life therefore, something happening or arriving, that you are not expecting, or arriving in an un-expected manner, something impossible or difficult to deal with, the unexpected or suprise event!

It is a phrase in baseball for the big fastball hitters who can't seem to take a curveball out of the park. Assume all the tasks you do each day are just life throwing fastballs at you and you hit each and everyone out of the park, (accomplish them) now when something unexpected happens that breaks up your normal routine it is life throwing you a "curveball."

A curve ball is an unexpected event in your life. In baseball, the pitcher throws the ball to the batter and it looks like it is coming straight at him, but it is actually following a curved trajectory that takes it out of the line of the bat.
In life, it is when something unexpected happens, like losing your job when you didn't know it was coming, getting pregnant when you are on the pill or farting in a crowded elevator while standing next to your boss. If that ever happens, look at your boss, wrinkle your nose and with a straight face say "Oh my God, couldn't you wait?"

Ever hear "If you wanna make the gods laugh, make plans"? Its kind of like that. Its when you make plans to do something and then a higher power causes something to happen that changes the plans, something completely out of your own control.
