I have friends from Poland and the Czech Replublic who have shown me how to download all the latest films, find live sport channels, find web pages where you can make free calls and sms messages, full free games etc etc, but they are all foreign sites. Do the English lack the knowldge or are they more worried about copyright then our European cousins?

I have stated that ALL downloads I can find are from sites that are NOT english.
Any ideas why?
And yes, I'm English.

Ha-ha, you've really opened up a can of worms there, haven't you? You could have presented your question in a more, let's just say, English-friendly way, but I get your meaning.
I do believe it's more about copyright in the UK and our stricter laws concerning such things... if anything, it's probably down to the fact that people in the UK have GREATER knowledge of the internet and its workings, and so have better ways of finding and stopping illegal content being distributed, whereas our European "cousins" have a combination of less knowledge and not giving a damn about the law of copyright.

The European countries have different laws than Americans do. As far as I know the Americans have copyright laws that prevent you from taking someone's work and making it your own without some payment of some kind (wouldn’t you want to be paid for your work instead of having someone steal it?). Hollywood is so scared that someone will take their latest films and make perfect digital copies that they don't want to put electronics or software that may allow a consumer to even think about doing so. If they are convinced it is only because the deal they make with another business makes it so they have complete control over the content and if you find a loophole they didn’t know about they can easily plug the hole. Now Europe is different, they don't give the same protections to the businesses so they are more able to exchange all the things you mentioned. It is not so much that anyone lacks the knowledge to do all those things it is they can't unless you know things about code which could land you in jail. I do agree that businesses want their hard work protected, but I also think they could loosen up a little too. After all America is falling behind other countries in certain technology and products simply because the businesses are not willing to compromise. It is the reason why Microsoft is slowly losing market share to Linux and Sony's Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-audio never took off. People really want to be able to use things they buy how they want to without a corporation looking at them under a microscope to see if they infringed on the law.

There will be some legal issues about that side of things - which I think is fair enough; movies and music aren't made for free.
And it's bit insulting to have the question stated like that; and rather unnecessarily too.
If anything, the UK has been exposed to the internet for longer and harder; we've grown up/gone through the "Get it free on the web stage" and it's settling into a more commercial entity (For good or bad) in some areas.
Poland and the Czech Republic will get there too - at some stage

Its a bit rich for you to say the English lack knowledge, at least we can spell the bloody word!
Being English is all about fair play: what Johnny Foreigner does is his business, some of us are honest.

The states are less totalitarian the ours, their government cares less about legislating to protect massive multinationals royalty payments. Also a touch more organised crime.
