At least 512 MB RAM is recommended for memory, more is better (get 1024MB if you can afford it). Get the fastest processor you can afford. Intel Centrino Duo is good. Windows XP is probably going to be the operating system, but early next year Windows Vista is coming out, so you want to make sure you have enough memory for Vista. Also, at least a 60 GB hard drive, more is better. Do you want to burn CD's and DVD's? Then you will want DVD/CD burner. Also consider the size of weight of the laptop and your own size and weight. You probably don't want to lug around a heavy laptop that is 17" if you are going to be carrying it around a lot and you're not someone who works out a lot. Then again, if you have poor eyesight a little tiny 12" screen might be hard to see. Around 14-15" should be a good size but not too heavy. Also, you'll need a bag to put it in. A regular backpack is best. If you have one of those cases with the computer company name on it, thieves will know what's in the bag. If it's in a backpack, thieves won't know what's in there so you will be safer.
