seems like, being metal, it is conducting alot of heat and reducing the amount of cold air reaching the air handler and ultimately my overly warm body. Would insulating it harm the system in any way?

only the return line (it is cold when the AC is running.) The inlet line should NOT be insulated..you want the heat to dissapate from that line.

By some Armaflex to cover "Large""Cold":Suction""Highside" at HomeDepot. It will come in many diffent sizes. Not knowing what size yours is. But it will be somewhere in the range of 5/8 to 1", unless you have a large house, I use more 3/4" that any other

Insulate the big line, leave the small one bare.

You should insulate the pipe that gets COLD because that will condensate and drip.

the suction line should be insulated( the larger one)
