Ok, I'm 21 years old and I should know, but I dont, but is inserting a tampon painful? Does it hurt any more or less if your hymen is still in tact? See, I've always had a very light period, so i have always just used a pantieliner, so I dont know. Explain, please?

Tampons can hurt when inserting because it is a dry wad of material being put into an area that is normally moist and has delicate mucosa (like the inside of your nose or eye) so it can cause friction, vaginal irritation and vaginal splitting.

If you have a light flow then this can increase the problem again in the same way inserting anything would because there is not enough lubrication.

Some women combat this problem by masturbating prior to insertion or using lubricant such as KY jelly on the tampon itself, alternatively you could try options such as menstrual cups (as they are made from rubber, silicone or plastic they are smooth so go in easier, also do not have the health risks and can be used even when there is no menstrual flow).

An intact hymen could make it more difficult to insert as tampons can break the hymen, they may also stretch the hymen, but women with in tact hymens have been using tampons and cups since the 1930's, for most it is fine. If your hymen is in tact and it is actually your hymen causing problems I'd suggest talking to a doctor as your hymen may be thicker than what is considered 'normal' so may need to be surgically cut so allow for vaginal penetration.

It does not hurt, but might feel a bit "dry" if you are at the end of your cycle. I used tampons for years prior to the big event, but everybody's hymen is not in the exact same spot.
