$20 that they owe

That isn't really a gift. That is cancelling an obligation, which isn't quite the same thing. A gift is something freely given. Now if you wanted to be a real stinker, you could give them a birthday card with $20 in it. Then if they wanted to repay you....

Yes & no.

First it is good to forgive the debt as the impression of a good deed honestly and promptly performed will last forever...but given as a birthday present waters down the product and says cheap, cheap, cheap.

I suggest you offer a gift not withstanding the debt and at a later date forgive the debt.

When you forgive the debt you should inform your friend that you value their friendship more than money and that you don't want the debt to become a wedge between you.

IN THE FUTURE, WHEN YOU LOAN MONEY TO A FRIEND OR A RELETIVE... CONSIDER IT A GIFT AT THE TIME YOU GIVE IT TO THEM RATHER THAN AS A LOAN... FOR THE WITCHERY OF WEALTH IS NOT IN HAVING BUT IN SHARING.

GOOD LUCK AND MAY YOU BE BLESSED WITH MANY TRUE FRIENDS THROUGHOUT LIFE.

No, I think it's not a good idea. To forgive a debt or to give money is not a birthday present, these happens all the time not on somebody birthday. A present has to be something real, touchable, valuable for the person you give to.

I have learned that with money the friendship ends. So if you are going to lend out money, only do so if you don't really need it, and can afford to let it go just in case you won't be paid back. Twenty dollars is not that much, so just let it go, and buy your friend a 'real' birthday present.

If you forgave the debt then it should not be a part of this question. It's obvious you need lessons in forgiveness.

uh, no. That is kind of petty. Be a good friend and atleast get him a card with a gift certificate.
