A dual band mobile will work.
The cheapest way to call the U.K for Australia is via landline.
Using a mobile you pay for the call and for the person you are calling to pick the phone up the other end.
I got caught that way.

A dual band will operate in Australia but you will be charged for the call from Australia and again for the call from the recipient. this will work out very expensive. Enquire from your supplier as to the costs first. You may be shocked or surprised.

I think as long as the network provider covers OZ it should be fine.

It may come up with another name like it would be T-Mobile in UK and some other name in OZ... but still the same network.
