A couple examples I would say are: Sling Blade and Jacob's Ladder.
Sure a lot of people saw them, but they were not blockbusters.

I thought sling blade was one of the best movies ever--great acting!! I wonder if it not being such a huge blockbuster had something to do with the name? I think it sounds like it would be some other dumb crapy action film--such a good movie though mmhhmmm

Definately The Butterfly Effect. Even though it was not a comedy I went into it not taking it seriously because funny man Ashton Kutcher was the star. He did amazing and the movie was suprisingly well done. I would highly recommend it!

Guillermo del Toro's "The Devil's Backbone." Great horror flick with even better political overtones about the true horrors of war.
