Off the top of my little head it would be boredom. Or over time the true colors of those around us start to show. You can only hide who you are so long even if all we can see are their words.

(I really wish I knew what had your goat today... will you tell me???)

Off the top of my head (& not being an expert), I would say: poor leadership. Humans can be foolish, and the majority has no bearing on what is good for the community as a whole, or even what is good for themselves, but a good & wise leader can unite, instead of divide their.

Not knowing your political persuasion, I hope I do not offend you, but by way of example: George W. Bush is a divider, not a leader who unites. The Republicans in the last few decades have been divisive as well. Depending on how truly interested you are in this subject, check out "Conservatives Without Conscience" by John Dean.

Good luck with your quest!

In the largest sense (I'm defining 'community' not to include personal relationships): Political expediency and media manipulation.

Hit someone in the zone of their 'self-interest', persuade them (rationally or otherwise), that a definable group is detrimental to that interest, then spread that message so it self-replicates.

Works every time.

Usually disappointments and disillusionment of the ideals that they all felt they held in common.
Sneakiness and jealousy can certainly worm their ways in and rot out the core.
Then there's apathy.

Too much of a good thing and too many expectations that can't possibly be met.
