Go to a pet store, they are green discs that smell bad, about the size of a penny or so. The algae eater will et them, just drop one in the tank, and BAM your'e done.

The fish called "algae eaters" sold in pet stores should be avoided. When they get bigger, they start to eat the scales off other fish in the tank. Use adequate filters and do frequent partial water changes, and you won't have an algae problem. Also, don't overfeed the fish (they actually eat much less for their body weight than warm-blooded animals), and don't put too many in the tank.

They're called algae eaters because they eat algae. If your tank has no algae in it, you might be able to find some naturally growing stuff and put a bit of it in your tank. It is best to use a type of algae that grows on surfaces rather than floating in the water.

Until you get some real algae, you can always use some pet store food. Try asking one of the pet store staff about algae eater food in particular, if it's a big enough store they should have some.

you can find wafers in your local pet store but if not they will eat uneaten fish food on the bottom of the tank just make sure it is not too much uneaten food will cause water problems also you will find at one point algae eaters are not helpful because they produce more waste then they are cleaning up but that happens when they get bigger and believe me they will up to 2 feet

Go to your local pet store, ask if they sell algae discs. Tetra and Wardley are popular brands.

Please, don't put anything you find growing outside your aquarium into your tank to feed your algae eater. They will eat some of the fish food you feed your other fish, but stick to letting them eat the algae in your tank and the algae discs.

First - read this...

Assuming you have a common Plec - I'd just go to your LFS and buy some Algae Wafers (they are as common as other fish foods).

The other items listed in that link are good sources of food for them too (lettuce, peas, spinach, etc...).
