The price we must pay for individuality is that we may disagree. While most civilized people can resolve difference that occur due to this fundamental of humanity, there exist two obstacles: a disagreement with no compromise and a least one person refusing to compromise. While most conflicts vary in degree as to the solutions, these two exception have the narrow solutions of 'fight or flight'. Often the strong will defeat the weak in a Darwinian show; however, with these options, that is to be expected.

It may be that we haven't evolved into beings of peace yet, despite what was said about "Survival of the Fittest." If we take the time to appreciate the gargantuan resources available to us and the dazzling technologies capable of transporting and making consumable those resources, we can see how "Survival of the Fittest" doesn't explain enough. We have enough to survive without killing each other.
As others have said, pride and fear create the desire to not just have, but to have in great conspicuous abundance. Of course, we are unwilling to produce all of this great stuff ourselves, so we need some people to make it for us - and at a low cost to us. This is part of the driving psychology for man's economic system, which dates back at least to Medieval times. Kings wanted great stuff and peasants toiled to produce it. I am oversimplifying this though because there are benefits of security to having one or a few leading your society.
There's a biochemist in the film "Waking Life" named Eamonn Healy who speaks enthusiastically about the rise of peace with "neohumans." Stages of evolution have come with increasing rapidity, especially when we focus on cultural evolution. The integration of our biology with technology may mark the next evolution. Helping it along, or perhaps conjoined with this development, we find studies of humans as social beings in the areas of psychology, sociology, political science, etcetera.
The way of the old was based on parasitism, dominance, war, and predation. An optimist like Healy says, "Be patient." In his words (from the film), "the new evolutionary paradigm will give us the human traits of truth, of loyalty, of justice, of freedom."

We can't live on peace because we are unhappy with ourselves. If you can't love yourself then how can you show anyone else love which if you are looking at it from the peace prospective is all that anyone really wants. If you smile at someone they will smile at the next person and it will continue on and on. and if you ignore someone or look at them in a hateful manor (on purpose or not) they will in turn do the same to the next person. Then you bring in greed , the need to have the most and to try and satisfy a part of you the can not be satisfied by any material on this earth. We will all parish before peace come to this earth because peace isn't the answer that we all want. It is personal gratification. we are too selfish- is the short answer

Because according to the Bible at Ecclesiastes 8:9 man has dominated man to his injury and the reason is found at Jeremiah 10:23 "I well know, O Jehovah that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step."(We were not made to govern ourselves free from God. Many people today think the Bible is outdated and so they don't follow it. So because of this people are ,"lovers of money, self-assuming,haughty,blasphemers,disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal ,having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control,fierce,withou out love of goodness;betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God.People need to return to loving God not just saying they are religious but actually obeying his principles and standards that are in the Bible. Would things be perfect? No because we are all imperfect and cannot follow things perfectly. But with our best efforts there would be less wars, killing kidnapping hate.We wouldn't feel like we are in a forest, like animals. The Bible gives the solution:the time will come when "God in heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin, and the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms an it itself will stand to timess indefinite. (peace is on the way because God is going to clean things up.

you can learn a lot about humans from watching chimpanzees in the wild, these primates belong to troupes that "own" a territory. The males monitor the perimeters of the Territory and make sorties to attack members of other troupes.
We are not different, Just more complicated, we belong to a giant troupe (country) feel the need to protect our territory (and our females)and attack other troupes (countries) when we feel they encroach on our territory.
So war is a natural human state, and one of the most famous human inventions - competitive sport, is a ritualized form of mock war.
war is in our genes, we can't help it.
