Did they specifically tell you to attach the resume as a word doc? If so, great. If not, some companies to not accept attachments for fear of viruses. In that case, you should include the resume in the body of your email. You do this by doing a 'save as' of your word file into a .txt file. Then cut and paste into your email. You'll lose all your fancy formatting, so you'll have to use the space bar and asterisks to make it look decent. Regarding the cover letter, let that be the intro of your email. Yes, people often don't have the time to read a cover letter. In that case, they'll just not read it. But if they DO want to read it, it will be there. The best format for a cover letter is to tell them the internship you're responding to, a brief overview of your education and any experience, and then a section telling them why you're qualified (based on their internship description). This last section is most important. It is your way of tying together for them 'their needs' and 'your qualifications'. Pick the top 3 things they are asking for, and tell them how you match up.

I've been an entrepreneur for almost ten years now and I have hired a few hundred people, I ( and most other HR people) really dont have time to read a cover letter for a resume ( since we get stacks and stacks of them all the time ). Keep your resume one page, dont include the cover letter

To me, the body of your email is the cover letter. The file you attach should just be your resume.
