Scientific Notation??!?
Can someone please help me put at least one of these numbers in scientfic notation.... 53,657 kg.......0.000043 L........0.00083.....1011.9 cm....or 0.000000617..I don't care which one you put in scienific notation just choose one please!!
If you have a website thats also real helpful thanks!!! best answer will recieve 10 points!

0.000043 L = 4.30 x 10^-5 (negative fifth power)
0.00083 = 8.30 x 10^-4 (negative ourth power)
0.000000617 = 6.17 x 10^-7 (negative seventh power)

Depending on if your instructor wants you to round or not, the answers would be:

5.3 7 x 10 (to the 4th power) or 5.3657 x 10 (to the 4th power

Basically you are moving the decimal point either left or right to make it a single digit with decimal point and more digits. For instance 1234, you move the decimal point to the left three place to make it a single digit like 1.234 and since you moved the decimal place 3 times it would be 10 to the 3rd power (10^3). I fyou move to the right it is to the negative power.

Background: In scientific notation, numbers are written using powers of ten in the form a×10^b where b is an integer exponent and the coefficient a is any real number, called the significand or mantissa. In normalized form, a is chosen such that 1 ≤ a < 10

1) Let's start with 53,657 kg or 53,657.0 kg If you shift the decimal point 4 spaces to the left you would get 5.3657 kg. If you wanted to shift it back to the right you could multiply by 10^4. So you could represent this number as two such decimal shifts (left and right) or...

5.3657 * 10^4 kg

2) for 0.000043 L you could shift the decimal to the right 5 spaces to get 4.3 L then shift it back to left five spaces by multiplying by 10^-5.

= 4.3 * 10 ^(-5) L

So basically you want to shift the decimal n places to the left or right in order to get one digit to the left of the decimal then shift back in the opposite direction by multiplying by 10^(+/- n)

A minor distinction: Mudhoney's answer to the second problem is 4.30*10^(-5) but technically this implies a greater degree of precision to the values than the original problem states, my answer of 4.3*10^(-5) is more correct. The original number is written out as 0.000043 L and not 0.0000430 L. A scientist would interpret the second value as being more precise. There is in fact a difference here, it's a small point, but certainly one of scientific relevance that shouldn't be overlooked!

scientific notation is fairly simple.....

take 53,657...if you were going to write it in scientic notation, the answer is 5.3657 x 10^4. Basically what you are doing is moving the decimal over 4 places to the left, so your multiplying by 10^4. If you were moving it in the opposite direction (to the right), for example, 0.000043, you would move the decimal 5 places, so it would be 4.3 x 10^-5.

Hope that helps
