I don't think unplugging things will save you very much at all, probably only pennies. Not worth it!

Keep your thermostat at a reasonable level, say 78 degrees or so, and be sure to change the filter in your heating/forced air unit on a regular basis.

Don't leave lights on in rooms you're not occupying, and don't leave the TV running all hours of the day and night.

Contact your local PGE office for more information -- I've always found them to be very helpful. They'll even come out to your house and give you pointers in person.

Good luck, and congrats on your new home!

Yes, unplug anything you are not using -- I saved over $100/mo. by doing this.

Make sure your hot water heater is insulated and is on a timer -- preferably with three settings. The hotwater will stay hot for a long time so set it to be on in the am (when you take a shower); when you normally clean (dishes and clothes) and then again at night for night time baithing or cleaning -- this keeps the hot water heater from running non-stop.

Also, get energy saver (Energy Star) products -- I have light bulbs that are flourescent and have a 9 year warrantee -- they aren't that expensive.

Energy Star products do not "draw" electricity when not in use like old stuff so you don't need to unplug those appliances.

Also, get solar night lights and walk way lights.

Good for you and your new home!!!!!

Search energy efficiency on the internet there are tons of ways to save money.

Use fluorescent bulbs where possible.
Install a programmable thermostat.
Turn lights off when not in rooms.
Wash full loads of clothes and not partials when possible.
Turn dishwasher on only when full. Use "air dry" setting. Open the door, slide the baskets out and let dishes air dry.
Dry clothes on a clothesline. Your clothes dryer is one of the highest energy consumers in your house.
Water heater should be set no higher than 120 degrees F. Lower if possible.
Change air filter every 30 days.
Have the power company install boxes on the A/C unit and water heater that let them shed loads under high demand. This can save $20 a month.
