What are some stretches that will help me turn out my hips in order to learn the splits? and my right hips often hurts when I try to do the "frog sit". Is it supposed to?

To avoid pain and stretch further and easier, the most important thing is to warm-up first. I simply jog on the spot for about 10min. Then do your usual table of stretch exercises, An easy one to do while watching TV is to lie on the floor facing the wall, with your bottom stuck to the wall and your legs opened against the wall, forming a V.You will notice as time passes that your legs open more and more with the help of gravity, etc, try to keep them in the open position.

I assume you mean the splits with your legs out to the side, as you don't need turnout to do the usual splits. For that, you need to stretch the muscle at the front of your hip, and your hamstrings.

For the sideways one, a good stretch is to lie on your back with your butt up against the wall and your legs straight up in the air. Have a good book or a magazine handy! Now open to second, as wide as you can go, keeping your legs straight and your toes pointed.

Now relax - but keep your legs in a wide side splits, don't let your knees bend - grab your book or magazine and just lie there as long as you can.

You'll feel the stretch as you lie there but it shouldn't be painful, but be warned, it will probably hurt when you try to get up! The best way is to roll over to one side and get up from there.

I'm a bit concerned about the right hip though. I assume you mean that it really hurts, not just the ouch-y feeling of pushing a stretch as far as you can. Real pain is a sign that something is wrong, so if it really hurts then maybe you should go and see a doctor or a sports therapist to get it checked out.

Yes the frog sit should hurt or its doing nothing
lay down on your back and sit ur butt up against a wall, put your legs in a pike on the wall, and let them drop to the strattle, while still lying down. Another, sit up against a wall back flat, and have two people push your legs back and up againt the wall

if ur hip hurts, u might be hyper extending. the frog sit is good, but just do it gradually, just put your legs in a straddle, and try to keep turned out... and do it every day... u'll be surprised how much u improve.
