I have seen a trendy, industrial flooring like this in a gallery. Just concrete, but it looks softer and smoother. What do you do to the concrete floor for this effect|?

the only thing I can think to do would be to sand it and maybe put a urethane clear coat over it... to preserve and make it look really nice!

Just like wood or rock materials (i.e. marble, granite) concrete is ground and polished by mechanical abrasion using industrial diamond tools, liquid concrete hardener and/or densifier is used in conjunction with the mechanical process for the purpose of increasing the density and dust-proofing the surface.

You can see the process (short video files of ‘how it’s done’) online at

I agree with Josh R. Another name of concrete etcher is Muriatic Acid. Don't get this stuff on you! Follow directions carefully and flush with plenty of water to neutralize the acid. Works great.

its a process called "shellacking", have U ever seen a shiny brick wall in a restaurant or upscale building? Yep- that's how they do it, it's a clear chemical, it looks like clear "KARO SYRUP" you buy it in the paint section of your hardware store, clean the surface well and roll or brush the "shellack" onto your surface, let it dry and U will have a brand new look.

Concrete has to be cleaned with a sulfuric acid solution, then wait at least 24 hours for it to dry...alot of times it will have to be cleaned again to insure it's free of dust, acid residue etc. you can tehn aplly a concrete STAIN and usually wait another 24 hours then clean off again, then put a sealer/clearcoat on it. ( works best if you have a smooth finish on it."

I would hire a company with experience to do this for you. You might save a little money now, but the damage you could cause to yourself later....

make sure it is extremely clean, like you were working with a wood floor, use a tack cloth. seal it. several coats of wax, and use a buffer. does look nice.

you have to seal it first,,,, then you can cover it with many different types of products that will give you the shine and/or toughness you are after.
