There are a couple things you might be able to do-
First of all, call you utility company as soon as possible. The sooner you call them, the more they can typically do to help you (do NOT wait until the due date of your bill or afterward)
Depending upon their policies, they may be able to take less than the full amount of the termination notice or take lower amount as a down payment on a payment plan.
If you're already on a payment plan or they cannot stop it with a lower amount, ask them for any energy assistance agencies they work with (also, call the ea agencies as soon as possible) Local churches will also sometimes help with utility bills.
If none of those can help you. Ask for their policies regard medical hardship, you may qualify for that. You'll usually need to get a statement from your doctor faxed in to them.
Also, as a customer service rep, when you call in to the company, be as polite as possible. Explain your situation. We get called every name in the book at least once a day and if someone actually acts like a decent human being, a typical rep will be willing to get you a break if they can.

You should really talk to the company. Explain to them calmly and rationally what happened and they may be able to come up with some sort of price plan for you. If not, is there some sort of Citizen's Advice place that could help you?

You may also want to try your local Department of Social Services. They often help with emergency issues like yours. Good luck.

If you will call the company yourself, they may be able to work out an arrangement with you. However, if they do work with you, if you do not abide by the terms they help you set, it may be the one and only time they will work with you.

You can go to your local town office. they have funds to help people that really need it. You just need to show you have just had surgery and have not been able to work in the past few weeks. they always can help.

go to the company itself. You could either call them, or stop in to their headquarters... tell them the situation, and see what happens. sometimes companies that supply necessary things will take into account your financial status.
