I know that the songs are real and were once sang by Johnny Cash and June Carter, but in the movie who sings them? I think that it sounds like Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are really singing them, and on the back of the soundtrack it has them as the singers, but i have this one soundtrack from another movie where it says it was them but they were really lip synching, so I was wondering if they did that for Walk The Line or not.

Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon really sang the songs in the movie. Watch the movie commentary for more info.
The roles were cast not only by acting skills but by singing. All the performers were chosen because of musical reasons. ex. Tyler Hilton as Elvis. Each actor and their band went through 3 months of training. Of course like all singers their voices have been digitally enhanced somehow. Some of the performances were live and some where lip synched because of the camera angles which would have a performer singing a song hundreds of times. Joaquin's voice was actually higher than Johnny's in the being of their training but he eventually found that deeper Johnny sound in his voice.
During the credits it is really Johnny and June singing.

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon performed all of the songs themselves, without being dubbed. They also learned to play their instruments (guitar and auto-harp, respectively) from scratch.

both jaoquin pheonix and reese witherspoon sang their own songs in the movie. they went through extensive musical training and learned how to play their respective instruments as well.
i'm sure they lip-synched during the movie's scenes. most do. and their vocals were probably altered in post to more closely match. that is usually done for non-professional singer.
but they did perform all the songs themselves.

The actors sang their own songs, but they were probably lip synching in some scenes -- lip synching to recordings of themselves done in a studio setting (so they sound better). Much of the dialogue in movies is dubbed in anyway, you know, so it's not that strange.

it really is Joaquin and Reese, when they signed on to do the movie they weren't aware that they were going to be singing, but they went ahead and did the movie any way.
