2 x 4 is actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2

If never heard of a 2 x 3 piece of lumber though. If there is one it's probably 1/2 inch shorter.

If Dave has been in building supply 15 years he should know a 2x is 1 1/2". All framing lumber is 1/2" smaller than the nominal size until it is 8" or bigger. These are 3/4" smaller (2x8 is actually 1 1/2" x 7 1/4").
