Rising gradually to more than 4 km above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. Its long submarine flanks descend to the sea floor an additional 5 km, and the sea floor in turn is depressed by Mauna Loa's great mass another 8 km. This makes the volcano's summit about 17 km (56,000 ft) above its base! The enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai`i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined.

Yes, it is one of about 20 others around the world known as Hot Spots or Mantle Plumes. The biggest eruption in Earth's history is that of Yellowstone 2.1 Million years ago. In this event, 585 cubic miles of rhyolite magma erupted. Compare to that of Mount St Helen's in 1980: 0.9 cubic miles, Tambora in Indonesia in 1815: 12 cubic miles, and Krakatau in 1883: 2.4 cubic miles.
It is possible that Yellowstone will produce another cataclysmic eruption in the next hundreds of thousands of years. See some amazing photos at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/yvo/
