I agree that the hours are long, and with staff coming and going so much, and you kind of can get snowed under with work, I think it was a good move to go into this sector.

Long time ago, I left school and got a job answering telephones for a hotel. I moved my way up the Front of house (Concierge, Reception and Nights) to my prior position as a Front Office Manager, where I was in charge of both managing the Reception and other Front of house stuff, and contributing to the managing of the entire hotel.

I never went to Uni, I gained the bulk of my knowledge from school and the job, and end up getting paid a bit more than Uni people (When you know how to run a hotel, they throw money at you).

Wanting to be self employed and have some freedom, I am now a Hotel Consultant (Amongst other things), but when I get bored with that, I will definetly go back to hotels.

Its a good career if you have the stomach to handle it, and the brains to work it.

It depends on what career you want, perhaps if u want to work in a hotel or restaurant you could have the opportunity to look after the running of the business on a daily basis but if u wanted to be a manager of a hotel you might need a lot of experience or perhaps go to university to do a degree in business management

It is a good way to go if you plan to stay in that area. If you just want to get a paycheck and some experience while going to school, try to find something in your field. I have a degree in business and 10 years restaurant experience. I have found once you have done restaurant or retail a while you get pigeonholed and its hard to find something in a professional environment because they look at your resume and think all you can do is food service.
