Everyone seems to aspire to car ownership, despite the fact that you can often be stuck for ages in traffic jams. Public transport appears to be stigmatised and just for those who can't afford a car. It is far more environmentally friendly and - in many cities - quicker.

What do you think about taking the bus/metro/tram?

I think that for cities like New York and London, MTA are awesome, but in cities where urban sprawling takes places such as Los Angeles or Miami... its impossible.. I live in South Florida and i can't walk a block because of the heat, plus these cities were made for you to have a car.. in many places there isnt even side walks. So i would say Yes, Public transportation is good in certain places but not all.

The last time i took a bus was when my son was 2 ( he's 13 now ) and only because it was cold and i didn't want him to freeze . I do not get on a bus to go anywhere , not because I'm a snob , just hate them , they're uncomfortable and demeaning , and the lack of privacy on a bus is terrible , I would walk in the rain rather than take a bus , plus the cost of bus fares now is only marginally cheaper than driving so what's the point . If my car breaks down or i get stuck anywhere within a hours walk then I'll walk home . And as for the environment have you seen the smoke that comes out of a bus ....

You are absolutely correct. Public transport is far more quicker than the car. Here in Greece, lots of people use the bus, more of them the metro and the tram. The gasoline is now very expensive so it's cheaper to take a taxi/metro etc. I love cars, so I travel in the city with public transport and out of it with my car.

I get the public transport regularly, not because we do not have a car (we have one) it is a lot less hassle to park, and it is quite cheap. Using the public transport encourages you to talk to people, I have made a lot of friends just by using public transport. Besides the social aspect it is kinder to the environment because approximately there are 51 cars less on the road, if you think about the emission's that has been reduced 51 times. People do not take public transport because they do not know how to commute.
FOR EXAMPLE going to catch a bus to get into town for 1.05pm you would have to get the 12.50 bus which would get into town for 1.03pm. no use leaving home to get the bus if has gone.

I live in ireland where the long distance busses are often 20 minutes late and the trains are sometimes dangerously overcrowded (to european standards that is). I think public transport is essential to a city. I dont think any of us who live in urban areas should be required to own a car. I am greatly in favour of public transport, but it has to be better run and when new parts of cities are built the planners should always take bus lanes and train tracks into account, even if they are not being built in the immediate future, it doesnt hurt to leave a bit of room just in case, as opposed to having to level buildings

When I lived in Chicago I prefered using the CTA. I did not have to find a parking space and it was quicker. In Minneapolis I used the bus system, and I also bought a bicycle. Minneapolis did not have the good system of public transportation that Chicago did. They now have a train but that is just a long a certain line. I used the MTA in Boston and I liked that. I did not bike in either Boston or Chicago. But in the Twin cities it was a good way to get around and always easy to find parking.

It depends on where you live. If you have a bus stop just down the street it MIGHT be okay. But I live way too far from any form of public transport and the only time I ever used it is when I had jury duty downtown and I drove to the trolley station (that has plenty of FREE parking) and took the trolley downtown (that has NO PARKING).

With Public Transport you have no traffic jams, no city center parking problems, and it's often cheaper than going by car :-)

Public transportation is a good choice. It helps the environment and is cheaper. It's a cleaner solution than driving your own car and it costs less.

I am not a public transportation person unless its an emergency. I use a car instead and if no car is available to me I just hold off until one is.
