For better gaming you should have Pentium 4 (HT Technology) 3.06Ghz
and RAM of 1 GB or 512 MB and
Video Card with 3D and of 256 Memory and
a good monitor may be TFT of 17"

Do not use LCD because they slow the gaming.

You're probably not going to see better performance with a new processor (P4 is plenty fast). You might want to consider the following:
Hard drive RPM speed needs to be at least 7200 for good gaming.
Increasing the amount of RAM in your system if you have under a gig.
Getting a better graphics card will probably help the most if you do not have one of the newer types.

Pentium 4 is now after dual core technology. Single core processors are not available in the market. 2 types of P4 are available...P4 with dual core, p4 with dual core n HT technology. Obviously the ht one is faster; n more expensive too. But if gaming is your priority then concentrate on grafix card and memory. processor just has to meet the frequency limit the real job is done by grafix card while you are gaming.

Look at the new core 2 duo, there the fastest processors right now a lot powerful than pentium d and p4. You may think the clockspeed is low like 2.8-2.9 ghz but there very fast.

Some motherboards can be upgraded to better processors. The motherboard manufactuer will have a list of supported cpu processors for the model of your motherboard. You may need to use a newer bios version for it to work. If you have a Dell, HP, or Compaq this may or may not be possible. Here is a link to Intel's Motherboard Selector:

Go to a Pentium D dual core. The base fits and it is faster. See www.pricewatch.com for prices and dealers. Get the fastest you can afford.
