Stevie Nicks is great but I would go with Grace Slick (Jefferson airplane), then Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt and and Carole King. All great singers. And for country, Crystal Gayle has a truly beautiful voice.

Lee Krasner. After that, I can't put my finger on a favourite, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Norah Jones. But it's horses for courses. All of the female artists mentioned above have wonderful voices, without a doubt (except Madonna who can't sing for ****), so it's sort of an incurable question.

It has to be Tori Amos. Every song she writes is strong and engaging. She isn't afraid to let her feelings out no matter what, and she is fantastic live. But Joni Mitchell, Carol King, PJ Harvey, Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann and Jewel aren't bad either.

The wonderful thing about all of these singers is that whenever one of their songs is played it takes you somewhere. Back to the place where you first heard it, or to somewhere they've been. Love it.
