I have a 1999 Saab 9-3 that overheats, and I think the water pump or a hose is leaking coolant ... but for now, I was wondering if it was okay to put water in there, as I know there is some coolant left so the mixture should end up as 50/50. I know in older engines this is okay, but I'm not so sure about a turbocharged 4 cylinder.

yeah, but don't let it freeze or you can crack the block.

In the 1980's inventor Jack Evans discovered the advantages of using a waterless coolant. His final formulation is a mixture of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. This coolant has a high boiling point of 370F and is not corrosive, solving many of water's problems including freezing.

A 1:1 dilution with water is usually used, resulting in a freezing point of approximately −40 °F (−40 °C). In warmer areas weaker dilutions are used.

antifreeze is 50/50 to start off with ..its not strait coolent its mixed with water..and now adding more water with a leak will only make the engine run hotter and making your oil do more work and being a turbo.it run hotter than non turbos. bad idea buy some antifreeze and mix it with water and find the leak. also your raditor cap could no good if doesnt hold the right amount of pressure you will start to over heat and loose coolant..after all coolant is nothing more than alcohal and water mixed together and they add the color in so you can see it..normally it clear like water..dont take a chance on killing your engine..

yes but make sure it is distilled and not from the hose.
How do you know it is leaking coolant?
Do the job right and have your car serviced.

The water has a lower boiling point. You are best to get your leak fixed then use anti freeze.
